Abstract: Small modular reactors are the next round of development in the global energy industry. Small modular reactors have several significant advantages. Simultaneously, the feasibility of their construction is still debated in various countries. Only some countries started construction of these plants. The benefits of the building and use of small modular reactors in comparison with reactors of large capacity are described. It is emphasized that special personnel training for the management and maintenance of small modular reactors is an important aspect. Views of various scientists regarding the construction and use of small modular reactors in Ukraine are summarized. There are indicators according to the criteria “Operational safety” and “Personnel resource.” Finally, a comparison of small modular and large-capacity reactors is made.
